Is this a proper game review? (IGN review)

Postby Q_B » Thu Jun 16, 2011 1:08 am

Hi folks!

I'm thoroughly pissed off at the IGN review  . Not because of the score. But because of the justification for it. And because the feeling that the guy gave a mediocre score completely based on his inhabillity to properly play the game. And because he didn't even cared to talk about a huge feature like the editor.

Just posted this here because it really made me sick. There are so much more things to say, probably tomorrow I'll elaborate, too tired now.
I'll leave you with a quote from a guy in a NeoGaf thread about this same stupid review:

"The game is fair if you take the time to, first learn the interface (shortcuts to call single units or groups of units), and second, use the units abilities in an efficient way. If the player/reviewer tries to fly through the level he will get his ass handed on a plate. Exploration of the levels is often rewarded with bonus items and new units that can tip the battle in our favor. I can imagine that the guy tried to speed play through the game to get the review done and failed at that. And the game does have a difficulty option." Corto's post

Edit: So many things wrong in that ... thing! Even besides the article! It says that the game's release date ... Europe:TBA 2011 ... what the ...

I agree with you. I haven't gotten far in this game and don't have much experience with RTS games, but can tell it's a quality game. It seems the reviewer had a bad taste left in his mouth from the beating he received and vented. Not a mention about the level editor, and not much talk about the other features, aside from faring well in one game of multiplayer.

Something else to make note of is how this reviewers comments oppose what other reviewers mention. I am in the same boat as the reviewer, as basically the only other strategy game I've played that I can think of is Mushroom Wars, but I'm not so certain someone that hasn't played RTS games should review the game.

IGN will be the first inline to discredit a promising PSN exclusive, or anything that makes the PS3 unique in general. IGN are in all likeliness on the payroll of ol' Billy Gates.

They don't even try to pass the first chapter. All the next chapters have new objectives and different adventures that i loved so much.

IGN sucks, put some nice review reviewing this game.

No, seriously ... WHAT THE HELL??????

I've been so thoroughly pissed at this review, that I failed to notice there's a small "video review".

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GUY DOING REVIEWING THIS GAME?????

First, I notice he takes only 1 archer unit. I thought, well, ok, at this stage of the game, last level of 1st chapter, he should know better, but, well ... maybe he has some tactics I don't know of... don't know how he's going to manage to keep the archers alive, but, ok, lets see... 1x archer, 2x warrior, 1x gunner.

And then, all of a sudden, EVERYTHING is revealed, wide open... THIS GUY KNOWS NOTHING OF HOW TO PLAY THE BASICS!!!!

Unit groups with D-Pad??? Nahhhh! That's apparently for losers who... gasp! ... actually TRY to play the game! Let's just select ALL of the units instead.

Ok then! All the units in one big bunch, nice tactics, numerical advantage... not :P

So what to do with this indiscriminate bunch of units? Well, isn't it OBVIOUS??? Don't you see those enemies down there, right in the nice spot, down the hill? Attack!!!! Let's send the whole bunch, warriors, archers, cannon ... everyone! Oh wait, actually, for good measure, lets put the cannon guy firing right into the middle of the big confusion, too!

WHAT THE HELL!!!???? This is the end of the first chapter, so I insist: by this time, even the most dumb player with a minimum will to learn should know the basics, never mind strategy or tactics.

And then he reviews the game as being "Too damn hard" ???? What? Of course it's too damn hard, for someone who obviously just knows nothing about this type of games, has evidently skipped through the basic levels and tutorial without giving a damn!

Is this real? I mean, is this guy a game reviewer? How can it be that this person has, in his hands, the power to affect the future of this game, of its developers, of its chances to sell... and yet, with this "great" power, fails to show the BARE MINIMUM of responsibility?
This goes beyond game ratings, reviews. This, as everyone can see for itself looking at the small video review, is a matter of minimum standards. Minimum. things like this should not be accepted.

This review purports itself as being a review on the shoes of a casual, everyday, non-hardcore player. By behaving like this, the reviewer is casting his image upon the vast majority of game players. In other words, he's calling you ignorant and dumb, and saying you are not able to even grasp or care for the minimum basics of a game. Is this how you, gamer, want to be treated?

Yep, that review ticked me off. If you suck at the game or don't grasp its mechanics, fine. Just don't give a low score based on your inability to properly play, pass the review onto something else.

Plus, it's IGN, you shouldn't taken them seriously. Nobody does these day. You can't spell ignorance without IGN

@ Eternal_Lord,

This is not your opinion or mine. This is IGN. This review has consequences. Not for you, not for me, surely has some for Seed Studios and Under Siege.
This is not users or amateur reviews. Everybody expects devs to be and act professionally, always. The same should be demanded of other professionals working on the market. I don't even care greatly for reviews, but I do care about lack of professionalism. And this one is blatant.

edit: Ahhh, what the heck, I gotta chill out... enough ranting :|

Haha, no worries, it makes me mad too.

Granted Under Siege isn't a perfect game, it's a far cry from a 5/10 and I think the community and player response shows that.
